Kinana encourages more cross-border coffee exports

Posted on : Wednesday , 10th June 2015

CCM has encouraged coffee farmers to seek good prices of the crop from the neighbouring countries particularly Uganda where buyers are ready to offer 5,000/- per kg.

That offer looks very attractive than 2,000/- offered by the Cooperative Unions locally with Mr Kinana pleading for the authorities to let farmers persue reliable markets for the crop.

Mr Kinana made the remark after farmers complained that some government officials and cooperative unions were restricting them from selling coffee outside the country.

He pointed an accusing finger to the legislation which was enacted back in colonial era putting cumbersome procedures and bureaucracy in managing export of four important crops including coffee.

“There are so many outdated laws that delay development of our people and this one on coffee is among them. I am challenging the authorities to amend these laws and let the farmers enjoy their sweats,” he said.

In this era of free trade and globalisation, Mr Kinana cautioned, having such outdated laws were nothing more than sabotaging people’s energy who spend years and years to cultivate their crops with huge costs only to end up being forced to sell them in the unfriendly local market.

As an example, he said if tanzanite can be directly exported by private dealers then why not coffee. He was supported by the Kagera Regional Commissioner, Mr John Kinana encourages more cross-border coffee exports Mongela, who said he was wondering at the farmers who sell coffee at such a poor price, while there were abundant good markets out there

Mr Kinana is in Muleba District where among other places he made an history as the first CCM Secretary General to visit the distant and hard to reach Lake Victoria islands.

The residents also complained over the local government authorities asking to pay fines for allegedly using inferior fishing gears that were locally available.

Mr Kinana said it was not proper imposing strict conditions on things offering day to day lives of the people without providing alternative means.

He wondered why the substandard fishing gears were still flocking the local outlets promising to contact the Ministry of Trade and Industries on the matter.
